Lauren Mitchell

Jazz & Soul

Lauren Anne Mitchell, and her first album ‘Debut', a beautiful showcase of her undeniable talents, caught the attention of the New Zealand music scene and inspired a collection of positive reviews that heralded her as perhaps New Zealand's own Alicia Keys.

With ‘Debut', Mitchell uncorked a sparkling collection of seductive soul and jazz that revealed her skills as both a singer-songwriter and musician, with songs drawn from a well of honesty, laced with emotion, positivity, and individuality.

What made the album more impressive was that in short order, Mitchell established herself as one of New Zealand's leading independent singer-songwriters. The flourishing independent music scene, where bands and artists take direct control over their career management, album production and distribution, has seen a significant growth in New Zealand artists hitting success without the need for major labels.

However, very few women in New Zealand have taken this path, which makes Lauren Mitchell both unique and courageous in the local music scene. It also casts her as the kind of woman who lives the values that we celebrate in New Zealand: daring, individual, committed to her craft and hard working.

All of which comes to nought if the talent isn't there to deliver. Rightfully, the New Zealand music press thought highly enough of Lauren Mitchell to say:

"There's no question that LA Mitchell's ‘Debut' introduces a very talented and creative musician. The grooves, the singing, the whole production are really impressive... We'll be hearing a lot more of LA Mitchell." Nick Bollinger, Radio New Zealand

"Mitchell's album is beautifully presented and extremely well mastered... I found myself blissfully daydreaming." - ****1/2 Marty Blake, Waikato Times:

"Here's a nice surprise... Debut never tries to be anything more than it is: a nice batch of songs from a fresh young talent." Simon Sweetman, North & South

"It's difficult to listen to LA Mitchell and not compare her to Hollie Smith. Both are New Zealanders blessed with a beautiful voice and a love of R&B and jazz." Marty Duda, Real Groove

"Her unique voice insinuates itself into your heart." Vicki Anderson, The Christchurch Press

"She has perfect diction and near perfect pitch. Her touch is light and deft. Her original songs compliment her voice, the band and her piano." Groove Guide

"Lauren is a fantastic vocalist, very impressive. Style, panache and attitude." Liz Barry, Radio New Zealand
