Nathan HainesNathan Haines has been a prominent face in the world of jazz and electronic music in New Zealand for more than 20 years. He has six solo albums, four released internationally, and has collaborations with many renowned artists including Jamiroquai, Billy Coham, Da Lata, Vanessa Freeman and Marlena Shaw.
Nathan inherited his love for music from his father who was a jazz bassist. Nathan’s outstanding talent became evident early on when in 1985, at the age of 13, he won Most Outstanding Young Jazz Musician. In 1989 he received the Sony Young Jazz Musician of the Year, judged by US guitarist John Schofield, and received an AGC Young Achievers Award in 1991.
Since then he has recorded an album with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and played many major festivals and clubs throughout the world including the Tokyo Blue Note, the North Sea Jazz Festival, London’s Jazz Café and the UK's Southport Weekender. In 1997 he started a weekly residency at the famous Notting Hill Arts Club in London, which lasted for four years, and he regularly topped London’s weekly guide Time Out as one of the top live music and DJ nights in the city.
After performing across Italy, Greece, Russia and the UK, he returned to New Zealand in 2005 to a sell-out tour in New Zealand. This year he released single Right Now on UK label Freestyle, and is currently recording his 7th solo album which is due for release in 2010. He has also joined the faculty at Auckland University Music Department and is teaching jazz saxophone and flute.
